Jack Freestone and his family were mutants who lived in Valle Soleada. They were friends with Marie D'Ancanto and helped her celebrate her sixteenth birthday.
Marie however lost her entire family and was mutilated by a gang of mutants. In revenge she tried to suicide-bomb a concert, in which the famous mutant, Lila Cheney was performing. After the X-Men stopped the attack Marie found that Jack, her good friend, was one of the attendees that she'd put at risk.
