Creation

Manyeo was created by Emily Kim and Takeshi Miyazawa, and first appeared in Silk #1 in 2022.

Although the comic references this character to be a shaman (which in Korean is either a mudang or a mansin), she is primarily a spellcaster and referred to as the manyeo or witch.

Manyeo using her powers to help her village

The Manyeo was once a little girl named Songi, who living in rural 17th Century Joseon (Korea). She was born with the ability to transer life energy between organisms, which she initially used to help her village before superstition caused the community to turn on her. Now an outcast, Songi became the villainous manyeo everybody saw her as, learning she could feed on the delirious adoration common people poured into state officials, shamans and heroes. That "worship energy" became intoxicating to her, expanding her powers into genuine witchcraft that she used to conjure four spectral warriors as her personal guard. Word of her power spread across the peninsula, and leaders across Joseon allied with one-another to entomb the Manyeo forever....
