Origin

Dr. Sorenson was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in Marvel Team-Up 59.

Chris Claremont went to Bard College and often connected his alma mater to his characters and stories, as seen in Dr. Sorenson's career below. (Jean Grey's father was also a professor there.)

Sorenson is a fairly rare example of a successful black woman scientist in comics, especially at the time of her creation in 1977.

Major Story Arcs

Doctor Sorenson is a research scientist. She becomes the head of the natural sciences division at Bard College.

Her husband, David, is a physicist as well. However, her career skyrockets and his does not, creating tensions in the marriage, ultimately leading to him physically beating her. She leaves him.

Her husband is killed in a lab accident. When their son, Terry, tries to save him, he is transformed into Equinox.

Leaving Bard, she teaches herself an entirely new field of science in an attempt to help Terry, but is unable to cure him. He goes insane and starts a life of crime.

She then works with Spider-Man and the Wasp to defeat and help her son. She and Spider-Man develop a Thermic Stabilizer which stops Equinox's energy reactions, at which point he is brought into custody.
