Origin

Thao Tran lived an ordinary life in Chicago, as the daughter of a Vietnamese Man and a Native American woman, since young age she developed a strong sense of justice. As a mutant herself, she started to search on the internet for information about mutant rights.

One day she took part in a local football match with her friends. There she witnessed how another young mutant, Alejandro Luna, was bullied by some of the young spectators. Angry by this, she got into the stands ready to confront the humans and help the young mutant. Because of Alejandro's lack of control over his empathic powers and Thao's attitude, a fight started. She was able to defend herself thanks to her mutant powers of invisibility and intangibility, but like the other young mutant, she lacked experience and control, and soon both teens were cornered into a fight.

Fortunately, they were saved by Kitty Pryde, who used her powers to easily get away from the fight. Thao was angry by what she considered an act of cowardice, but Kitty was quick to scold her, because her actions only worsened the situation. As Thao left, she lost control of her phasing powers and ended stuck in a pole, and Kitty quickly helped her phase again.

Once she cooled down, Thao was able to get Kitty's phone number and send her an apologize message. Kitty used this as a chance to present Thao and Alex to another young mutant, Trista, so they could befriend and leave Kitty alone.

Part of this plan worked, a the three of them quickly striked a friendship, but they still seek Kitty for guidance. Emma Frost soon became interested in the three young mutants and decided to train them. Kitty reluctanly agreed too, in order to help them so they could learn to defend themselves and could avoid the dangerous life of an X-men. Thao soon took interest in learning to control her powers.

Soon they were joined by Iceman, who came to Chicago to keep an eye on Kitty out of concern. When Kitty's actions during the war against Orchis were revealed, Thao quit the team disgusted and feeling like she couldn't trust on Kitty. She soon had to deal with her young mutant cousin being bullied at school, and when she offered to help she accidentally escalated the situation. After a talk with Trista, Alejandro and her cousin Ellie, Thao realized the error of her ways and apologized to Kitty for her behaviour, returning to the team.

Thanks to the training of Kitty, Emma and Iceman, Thao and her friends improved in the control of their powers. They also got an internship thanks to Priti, Kitty's roommate, and the three young mutants met Sheldon Xenos, the founder of Verate. Trista and Thao showed concern and mistrust towards the CEO, as he requested the DNA of Verate's users, but Alejandro was charmed by Xenos which caused a rift between the young mutants.

Soon Trista and Thao's concern proved true as Xenos turned out to be Mr. Sinister, who kidnapped Alex to experiment on him and tried to cover up his kidnapping with a malfunctioning clone. Trista was the first to realize the ruse and she and Thao were forced to stay behind while their teachers fought Sinister and rescued Alex. But they ended joining the battle after being tricked by an Iceman clone.

The mutants were able to rescue Alex and together they defeated Mr. Sinister. This battle started to get over Thao's head as she started to feel overconfident.
