N'garthl, Prince of Demons, was an ancient evil that roamed the earth when the Old Ones were still in power, and men hid in their privative caves for shelter. N'garthl knew no master, save one, and once awakened from his slumber required three lives to return to his hellish pit.

N'Garthl, Prince of Demons was an ancient evil that roamed the earth since the days of the Old Ones. He was awakened from his eons-old slumber by a Pictish witchman named Dhotaka of the Tanaka Tribe, who offered N'garthl three lives in exchange for the demon's servitude, ensuring the Tanaka people's power in the region.
Unfortunately for all involved, one of those sacrifices was to be Conan of Cimmeria. After a night's long hunt and constant skirmishing between the demon and the Cimmerian, Conan struck a deal with N'Garthl that the demon found more favorable. It proved fatal for Dhotaka.
Conan went back to the Tanka village and captured Dhotaka, and offered him to the demon as the "Third Life." He went on to state that the demon could either have a "meal trussed up and ready... or a fight to the finish." In the case of the later, Conan promised the demon who would carry many wounds back to Hell with him in exchange for his life.
N'garthl, wary of the Cimmerian's implied threat, and weary of Dhotaka's arrogance chose the witchman for his final life, leaving the Cimmerian in peace.
