Origin
Little is known about Marshall Afari’s early life before his transformation. He claims to be the great grandson of vampire hunter Jamal Afari and to have been bitten during the Blood Hunt but managed to resist a full transformation. The process left him a half-vampire, granting him enhanced agility, senses, and longevity while maintaining his human consciousness. Marshall adopted the alias Nightdrifter and became involved in the underground world of occult dealers and magical markets, earning a reputation as a clever, fast-talking fixer with questionable morals.
Creation
Nightdrifter debuts canonically in New Champions #7 by Steve Foxe and Ruari Coleman. He originally appeared on a variant cover for Blade in October 2023 drawn by Mateus Manhanini. This cover was part of the "New Champions" variants depicting original sidekicks for Marvel's title characters.

Meeting the New Champions
When the Champions begin their search for their missing teammate Hellrune, Moon Squire reaches out to someone from his occult past who might help them cross into the hidden Magic Market. That contact turns out to be Nightdrifter, who meets the team in Manchester, England. Confident and effortlessly charismatic, he immediately takes charge of the situation, explaining the invisible rules that govern the Market: never reveal your true name, never agree to a deal, and never make promises you don’t intend to keep. Though the group is cautious, Nightdrifter’s humor and flirtatious ease win them over. His half-vampiric nature is no secret — he mentions it openly, treating it like a quirk rather than a curse — and his familiarity with the occult quickly proves indispensable.
Inside the Market, Nightdrifter’s past mistakes catch up to him. The team is ambushed by Komakino, who is furious over a stolen ingredient. As chaos erupts, the New Champions fight alongside Marshall, who works to resolve the situation without escalating the violence. He strikes a risky bargain with a potion maker, to whom he already owes countless favors, and manages to concoct a brew that restores Komakino’s lost hair — the root of their feud. The creature, overjoyed, withdraws its attack, leaving the team stunned that the conflict began over something so trivial. With the crisis settled, Nightdrifter leads the Champions to Sister Ray, a mystical contact who might help them locate Hellrune. Before parting ways, he jokes that Jaren owes him one, his tone playful but edged with sincerity.
