Origin

Randall Spector grew up in Chicago the son of a rabbi, Elias Spector, and the brother of future Moon Knight, Marc Spector. He was an overlooked Jewish child that never seemed to be appreciated no matter what he did. His older brother affected him a lot by constantly playing war which Randall didn't like because he always got shot. Rand preferred baseball instead. Slowly, he became better than Marc at this game. Their father predicted that all this violent games would result in no good. He would be proven true when the two brothers became mercenaries together after leaving the military.

Creation

Randall appeared for the first time in flashbacks in a Moon Knight backup story in The Hulk! #17 by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz

Mercenary

At one point, Randall and Marc had teamed up as mercenaries. While running guns in Italy to anti-communist factions for the CIA, Rand betrayed his brother by running guns to the other side. When Marc found out, Rand spent the next three days running from his brother. The two got in a fire fight that ended when Marc threw a grenade that took Rand out. Luckily, he survived, but the doctors were afraid the injuries had driven him mad. Rand managed to escape the hospital by killing a nurse. This would be the last time that Marc saw Rand until after Marc was chosen by Khonshu to be the Moon Knight.

It was not the last time Rand would see Marc. Rand had fallen in with an Egyptian rebel contingency. They were attacked by Marc and his new partner, Bushman. Rand was injured but not killed. Although Marc hadn’t noticed his brother among the masked rebels, Rand believed he had and took his assault personally. Ironically, just like his brother, Rand would seek refuge in a nearby temple. He found an ancient scroll and a long passageway. The passageway brought him to the temple to Khonshu, where Marc had been left for dead shortly after by Bushman. He witnessed Marc be chosen as the Fist of Khonshu and became insanely jealous.

While on the run, Rand was taken in by rogue CIA agent, Sandahl Swarn, with whom he was previously intimate. As Princess Nepthys, she was the high priestess of the Cult of Khonshu. She planned on using Rand to have Marc Spector replaced as the Fist of Khonshu. Part of her plan was finding a patsy she could brainwash and surgically alter to pass as Rand. She would send him out into New York as the serial killer, The Hatchet Man, to draw Marc out. Moon Knight’s confrontation with the killer ended in the patsy’s death. While Marc thought he had killed his own brother, Rand got close to his residence, stole the head of his Khonshu statue and blew up the house.

Moon Knight tracked the cult down, but Nepthys and Rand only had enough time to gloat before Punisher attacked. He had been tracking them over the AIM weapons they stole. Rand and Nepthys are able to make their getaway when Marc tries to keep Punisher from killing anyone. They retreat to another lab under the Central Park reservoir, where she had combined Rand’s Egyptian scroll with CIA technology to create a “lunar absorber,” that would transform Rand into the Shadowknight, giving him the power to kill and replace Marc.

Marc and Rand dueled to the death while Punisher kept the rest of the cult busy. Although Rand’s skin was now nearly invulnerable, Marc was able to cut him using his adamantium weaponry. Marc hesitated to kill him and was distracted by Nepthys. While he and Punisher put her and the rest of the cult down for good, Rand made his getaway.

Later something altered his DNA (probably uranium tipped shells) on the battlefield, giving him a strange power. While being medicated, electrical or radioactive charges came out of his eyes breaking four ribs to a nurse. He was accused of accused of assaulting her which disabled his pension, health-care and not able to get a job. This affected negatively his family and didn't feel special anymore so he left. The Profile sought out Randall Spector and revealed to him that he knew about his past. The Profile said he is a disciple of Khonshu and that Randall is the only one worthy of fulfilling Khonshu's desire. The truth was that the Profile was working for Daredevil.

Wrapped in bandages and wearing a trench-coat, he kills a number of people in NY and writes messages in their blood trying to coax Moon Knight into appearing. When Marc is caught up in the issues involving Daredevil and Hell's Kitchen, Randall breaks into his house and violently attacks Marlene and then leaves her to die. Now seething with vengeance for his attack on Marlene, Moon Knight and Shadow Knight fight against each other causing Marc's glider to blow up while on a search for a Crescent Moon which might be able to help in the fight against the Beast in Daredevil.

In New Orleans, Randall disguises himself as a Voodoo Santeria priest and steals the Crescent Moon from his brother and start a fight in which many people die of crescent darts and lighting bolts. On a dock Randall reveals bombs strapped to his person, threatening to set them off in a crowd. With no choice, Moon Knight hurls the Crescent Moon at Randall, cutting his neck and killing him. This further effects Marc who says Jake is dead, and that he is only Marc Spector.

Revenant

Rand was one of a number of superhumans summoned as enslaved revenants to be used as security for The Blasphemy Cartel, black market occult arms dealers. He was specifically summoned to attack Clea, who at the time had taken Doctor Strange’s place as a defender against the occult since Strange’s death. Although the previous revenants had been heroes, Rand was a trained killer. As a revenant, he was much more feral than the rest. Clea performed an exorcism on Rand, disconnecting him from his dead body once again.

After he was freed from the land of the living once more, he found himself in The Duat, the Egyptian afterlife. He pledged his life to Anubis, becoming The Jackal Knight, as Moon Knight is to Khonshu. From The Duat, he was able to influence a street gang into becoming the Sons of the Jackal. They had been using the hearts of orphans to beat the test of the scales to earn entrance into The Duat. He sent them after a young boy, Khalil, who happened to be the avatar of Osiris. Randall planned on taking Osiris’ power for himself.

When Moon Knight failed to stop the gang in the land of the living, he entered the land of the dead, with the help of Hunter’s Moon, who slowed his heart. To combat Moon Knight (who had teamed up with a dead former mercenary partner, Scarlet Scarab), Randall summoned a team of Moon Knight’s dead rivals. They were at least able to keep Moon Knight busy long enough for Randal to steal Osiris’ power from the boy. He was now too powerful for both Moon Knight and Scarlet Scarab.

When Khalil awoke during the fight, he committed suicide, freeing Osiris' physical form to take the power back from Randall himself. Marc then shared his own heart with Randall, proving that the life Randall was so jealous of was one of sadness, guilt, and pain. In exchange for their help, Osiris sent both Marc and Khalil back to the land of the living to live out the rest of their days, while Randall was left behind.
