Red Locust
New heroine who crossed paths with Viv Vision in San Diego.
- Fernanda Rodriguez
- Agility
- Intellect
- Power Suit
Origin
Fernanda inherited the title and armor of the Red Locust. The lineage goes back before Mexico's colonization. It was created by The Locust Brotherhood, protectors of nomadic tribes and vulnerable travelers. The armor was intended to go to the first-born son, named Fernando in honor of Spain's king, however Fernanda's mother died before she could give Fernanda's father a son. Fernanda was chosen instead, much to the displeasure of the surviving Brotherhood members. Fernanda, who studied hydraulics and exoskeletons, made a lot of improvements including super strength and a jumping function.
Creation
Red Locust was created by Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos and first appeared in the pages of Champions Vol.2 issue 9 (2017).
Inspired by El Chapulin Colorado.
Major Story Arcs
Champion

After a few different run-ins with the members of The Champions, Red Locust was offered a membership when they were trying to expand the roster. He happily accepted, ready to work alongside her heroes. Once the roster was complete, Locust was put one of three task forces on simultaneous missions to test if the team could exist at this size.
Shortly after joining, Blackheart possessed Ironheart and turned many of the new recruits against the original roster. Blackheart had been manipulating their self-doubt after Mephisto tricked Miles Morales into a bargain. Accepting his weakness in working with Mephisto, Miles was able to inspire the rest to feel confident enough to fight back against Blackheart.
Outlawed

After the Champions respond to an attack on Ms. Marvel's school by Roxxon targeting a young child activist, "Kamala's Law" is passed requiring all superheroes under the age of 21 to get mentors in order to continue fighting crime. Locust is rounded up with other young heroes by the Champions so they can plan their next move.
Unfortunately, they were interrupted by C.R.A.D.L.E., the agency created to enforce Kamala’s Law, featuring members of the New Warriors. Locust was arrested and placed in a “reeducation center” along with other members and allies of the Champions.
The reeducation center was run by Roxxon. The free Champions were able to jailbreak Locust and the others and expose Roxxon’s true motives. In light of this, enforcement of Kamala’s Law was temporarily paused, and Locust was free to go home.
Powers & Abilities
Red Locust possesses no superhuman abilities, but her suit enhances her agility and dexterity as she is able to leap great heights/distances without suffering any damage; she is first seen jumping over and onto a cab. Her suit suffers some minor damage from gunfire but seems resistant to damage, with limits.
