The poor guy began as a comedic character who had some kind of attention problem, being unreliable, clumsy, and forgetful. And he was drawn like a midget with disproportional limbs. And then he became Tessie's boyfriend, the main victim of her antics, and a "chew toy" for her constant frustations.

He went to World War II and returned more confident and capable. But that didn't stop Tessie for making him suffer many hits and humillations, done in attempts to appease her.
