Whitney Hammond was the publisher of Beauty Magazine, a publication devoted to glamour and romance. He encountered the siren Venus in 1948 when she came to Earth to experience life among mortals. Although he did not believe that she was the actual goddess of love, believing her claim to be a publicity stunt, he saw the value of having his magazine associated with the legend of Venus. Employing Venus as a writer/editor, Hammond quickly fell in love with her.

Venus eventually parted ways with Hammond, rather than see him grow old as she remained young.

Later in Hammond's life, Venus finally returned to Earth to fight an alien named Gloom, and Whitney (now old) went to help her. Venus admitted she had lost 40 years of happiness which would never be regained, and brought him to Olympus
