Zotarr was created to protect the Troll King from traitors like Ulik. Since Ulik couldn't defeat Zotarr, he kidnapped Jane Foster and forced Thor to do his dirty work for him. The crushing blow of Thor exposed Zotarr to be nothing more than a mechanical troll.
