Ben Webster was a creation of Jay Jerome Willams, using the pen name "Edwin Alger". His "banksters" were crooked bank executives which manipulated mortgages to steal the homes of honest families. While one of the earliest adventure strips. its didactism and tendency to promote "decent values" has gained it an enduring reputation for dullness.
Ben Webster stories were regularly reprinted in "All-American Comics" #1-24 (1939-1941). He was then dropped from the schedule and replaced by Dr. Mid-Nite.
