Overview 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born in Kelloe, Durham, England on the 6th March 1806. Home schooled by her father, Elizabeth grew to be extraordinarily bright. Encouraged by both her father and mother, Elizabeth's poetry skills were fostered and nurtured. Tragedy struck for Elizabeth and her family when at age 15 she fell under the influence of an illness which resulted in loss of mobility for the youngster and head and spinal pain. Her illness made her body frail, and vulnerable, and she needed pain medicine to cope. In all this time though, Elizabeth's imagination and creativity never ceased.  
 
Her writing, particularly her poetry appeared in multiple publications and venues. Famous poet Edgar Allan Poe was a huge fan and inspired by Browning's work. Emily Dickinson, is another notable figure inspired by Browning's poetry.
