Overview

Emilja Plater was born in Vilnius Lithuania, on 13 November 1806. A Poland, Lithuania and Belarus hero, and icon, Emilja herself in her younger years, looked up to and admired such other famous, iconic national heroes, such as Laskarina Bouboulina and Joan of Arc. She was well educated and a gifted Equestrian,  Marksman and Fencer. Atypical of her fellow aristocratic female friends. Such skills no doubt aiding her in life as she took part in the November Uprising (Polish–Russian War 1830–31) Her determination, dedication and vehemence allowed her to break though to the Captain rank, a first for a woman in that area and time. She died young, and because of her age, and gender and willingness to fight for her country and people, she was turned into a cult figure and used as a symbol of uprising. Many literary works, art works, poems and articles have been dedicated to her. She also has many street names dedicated to her.
