The assassination of Henri IV, King of France and Navarre, is one of the defining events in the history of France. The king died under the blows of François Ravaillac on May 14, 1610.

This regicide surprised and upset his subjects. The Dauphin, Louis XIII, was not yet nine years old and Queen Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV, ensured a regency from 1610 to 1614, which marked a change in the policy of the kingdom within which her husband had brought civil peace after more than thirty years of religious war.
