History

John D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil company which later became Amoco. His legacy is a great one, as his descendants have devoted themselves to public service. He was the grandfather of Nelson Rockefeller, four term Governor of New York state and 41st Vice-President of the United States. He was also the grandfather of Nelson's brother Winthrop, who served two terms as Governor of Arkansas. He was a great grandfather to John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV, who served as both U.S. Senator and Governor of West Virginia. He was also a great grandfather to Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, who served 10 years as Lt. Governor of Arkansas.

John D. Rockefeller died May 23, 1937 at age 97. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, OH.
