Overview 

An active nurse in the Civil War, frustrated and distressed by the tragedy and suffering around her, Martha G. Kimball decided the best way for her to help alleviate such problems was to attend to wounded soldiers. One of the nurses who accompanied General Sherman's army on the march though Georgia. Later appointed an inspector of hospitals. In discussion with General Sherman, Martha suggested the idea of having a special day reserved to honoring the memory of dead soldiers. Setting into motion what would eventually become known as Memorial Day.
