Overview

Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch was born in Boston, Massachusetts in September 8, 1867. In her College years she was keen on volunteering and so involved herself in various volunteer organizations in poorer communities. She went on to teach Latin at Somerville, Massachusetts High School. After this, on a scholarship from the Women's Educational and Industrial Union, Mary attended the University of Berlin. Later on in her life her willingness to volunteer and aid those in need, led her to found Greenwich House, a settlement house, designed to aid the poor in the area by imparting knowledge and skills from those who can volunteer to teach and pass on said abilities.
