Mortal Kombat

In Mortal Kombat lore Musō Gonnosuke was a student of the Outworld master Bo' Rai Cho and a participant in a Mortal Kombat tournament, presumably after his legendary duels with Miyamoto Musashi. Despite his skill he was killed in battle by the sorcerer Shang Tsung and added to the soul stealers collection giving him the vast experience of the legendary samurai. It's assumed in the original timeline that Shang Tsung's death during the fight with Onaga freed his soul. In the current rebooted timeline the power of Musō Gonnosuke's soul was transferred with all others to Queen Sindel and again presumably released when Nightwolf sacrificed himself to stop Sindel.
