A historical monk who best lives on in fiction as a character in various retellings of his own travelogue, the most famous of these that inspired the rest was the Chinese novel 西遊記 (known in English as Journey to the West and Japanese as Saiyūki). As the events of these stories are heavily fantastical, depictions of the monk are not actually of the historical figure and multiple works depict him as female instead.
