Origin
He was a mafia boss in East Blue until one day two years ago before the timeskip when he was in Loguetown and witnessed Buggy's attempt to execute Luffy. Seeing the courage Luffy showed when he was almost executed, and the moment when lightning prevented the execution, made him develop such a deep admiration for Luffy that he gave up his career as a mafia boss and set sail to become a pirate and follow him.
