Ancient Egypt
In Ancient Egypt the original owner of the millennium ring was Mahad, a good friend to the young Pharoh, Mahad was defeated by Thief King Bakura so he merged his spirit with his own spirit monster the Illusion Magician to form the Dark Magician which was past to the Pharoh. This explains Yugi's present day connect to the Dark Magician.
