Definition

In the case of this page the word fumetti is explicitly being used to describe the entire Italian industry, although to some outside Italy the word only refers to photocomics. Also, to avoid redundancy Fumetti Erotici d'Epoca are listed separately but they can also be covered in less detail by this page even if the issues should not be credited to this page.

History

Italy is one of the largest comic industries of continental Europe alongside the French, German and Spanish industries.

Notable Creators and Series

Italy's longest-running comics include a handful of comic anthologies that have published thousands of issues like Skorpio, Lanciostory, Topolino and others. Some of the more notable long-running original Italian comics include the signature franchises of Sergio Bonelli (Dylan Dog, Martin Mystere, Tex, Zagor, Nathan Never) or Diabolik.

Translation Industry

Like most of the major European comic producers, a lot of published material in Italy is translated from other countries including significant coverage of American comics, Japanese manga and other European comics. In regards to its manga publishing, Italy is notable for often publishing works in an anthology series numbering that is reflected on the back cover or in the interior as a type of editorial collection which gives many manga series a dual name/numbering system. This similar numbering effect also ties into many publications such as lumping together multiple American volumes featuring a character into a single editorial series, which makes it more common for volumes from certain publishers to have hundreds of issues as opposed to many smaller volumes.
