History
After Brazil, Argentina is the largest comic industry in South America and when the two are combined with Colombia and Chile, the four countries make up virtually all comics published south of Mexico in the Americas. Like many comic industries, there was significant growth following World War II but Argentina is one of the handful of countries that can directly trace its established industry to the 1920's and earlier. As a significant example, the popular character Patoruzú was first published in 1928 and from the 30's-70's had an ongoing comic publication that lasted just over 2000 issues. Another Argentinian comic publication to end near the 2000 issue milestone (falling short of it) was Anteojito, published from 1964-2001. In the modern more global industry, Argentina's original comic output has greatly reduced and while there are still publishers releasing translated materials, now with more of an addition of Japan alongside America, there's more commonly a distribution of material that was published in Spain or Mexico.
Notable Creators and Series
El Eternauta was a popular comic that began in the late 50's and has been translated into many languages.
Translation Industry
Like similar international industries, a lot of the material being published in the mid-20th century were American reprints like El Pato Donald, Superhombre and Robin (translated into Spanish).
