Definition

Taking into account their modern industries, the Taiwanese is the second-oldest after Hong Kong of the three main Chinese regions. This page does not cover the unique and separate industries from Hong Kong or the mainland though all three regions are sometimes lumped together as Chinese Manhua.

History

Similarly to the manga industry, early Taiwanese comics can be traced back to the early 1900's but the modern industry mostly began in the late 70's and early 80's. Through the 80's it was extremely common and successful for publishers to release pirated translations of Japanese manga but by the early 90's this industry was legitimized and has continued ever since in that form. There is also an underlying industry of original material but there can be some shared works with other Chinese industries like the major Taiwanese publisher Tong Li having a Hong Kong division and simultaneously publishing works between the two, in either direction with Hong Kong works released in Taiwan and Taiwan works released in Hong Kong.

Notable Creators and Series

Significant authors within Taiwan include Max Lai, Nicky Lee and You Su-lan. Some of the Chinese authors who were published in the Japanese industry or other international industries came from Taiwan including Chen Uen or Jo Chen.

Translation Industry

Of the Chinese publishing industries, Taiwan is the most associated with publishing translations of international material (particular manga). There are manga that have distinct published translations in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Mainland but when there is only one translation or a first translation, it is usually Taiwan. Taiwan has entire long-running magazines that mostly translate their Japanese counterparts like Formosa Youth and are able to sustain themselves at the same publishing rate as the Japanese original and with a larger sampling of the Japanese contents than similar magazines had in other territories where this method was attempted (including America, Korea or Europe).
