A reverend rides with Hex while he searches for the Sam Bronson gang. When he finally confronts the gang in a rocky canyon, the gunfire causes an avalanche burying Hex. When he comes to hours later he believes he finds a letter to the reverend which he assumes was intended for him. He soon takes the reverend's place at Fort Onandaga serving the Sixth Cavalry.
