After a car crash puts Cooper Santiago and Larissa Sinclair into a deadly predicament, Cooper Santiago is forced to give a stranger named Jordan superpowers - something he typically only does after a person has signed a contract - in order for all of them to escape the wrecked car and survive. Meanwhile, Larissa's powers are out of control and Cooper Santiago must rush Larissa to her father before her powers (an astral projection known as "Angry Jenny") kill her father. Finally, right before Angy Jenny kills her father, Larissa is able to fully control and integrate her powers into herself, thus eliminating Angry Jenny forever. 
Although her fathers life is saved, the damage to his career and political aspirations has been done. Moses Sinclair, angry that Cooper was unable to help his daughter before his plans were ruined, refuses to pay Cooper. Cooper does not care, though, because the superpowers that manifested in Jordan are the best Cooper has seen and with his new superhero, Cooper is sure that money will no longer be an issue. That is, until Jordan vanishes before Cooper Santiago learns his address or gets him to sign a contract...
