In the first of three self-contained stories exploring different subcultures in the City, an acquaintance of Spider Jerusalem's opts to have his consciousness downloaded, so Spider watches him and discovers the bizarre, insular community of posthuman "foglets."

Spider tries to help his assistant Channon come to terms with her boyfriend's decision to transfer his consciousness into a sentient nanite cloud.
