See the secret life of Jean Grey, The Phoenix!
Phoenix
Sara Grey stands over the grave of her sister, Jean. Grey reminisces of a time prior to her sister's death. They had gone sailing. Grey was still having trouble completely comprehending her sister's revelation of being a mutant, and an X-Man. Grey feared her own children might, too, be mutants. A sudden fog swept over their vessel, rendering them unconscious. Jean fell overboard, dreaming of a past incident, the time when her mutant power first manifested. Her friend, Annie Richardson, had been struck by a car. Jean was telepathically linked to Richardson when she died. Terrified of her strange new powers, Jean became withdrawn.
Her parents eventually brought her to Professor Charles Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, where she finally learned to cope with her powers. More than just cope, Jean honed them as a member of the X-Men, until the day she gave her life to save them, returning as the Phoenix. Jean awakens in an underwater palace, inexplicably transformed into an Atlantaean. Jean helps Grey cope with the change. The Grey sisters are brought before Attuma, Warlord Of Atlantis. Attuma intends for the Greys to be breeding stock. While Attuma has taken precautions against Jean, as Marvel Girl, he is unprepared for her powers as the Phoenix.
The Phoenix defeats Attuma in single combat, then fights her way out of Attuma's citadel. The Phoenix, and Grey, escape. However, upon reaching shore, Grey finds that she cannot breathe. Her Atlantaean physiology only allows her to breathe underwater now. The Phoenix restores Grey to normal, atom by atom, though the effort nearly kills them both. The Phoenix removes the memory of the entire incident from Grey, believing that Grey is not yet ready to deal with it. Upon her sister's death, Grey's memories returned. Grey still fears that her children may be mutants, but, now, also takes pride in the knowledge that they could be like her sister.
Winter Carnival
Robert Drake admires an ice sculpture of the Angel, on the campus of Dartmouth College. Drake uses his mutant powers to add a sculpture of the Ice Man, to the procession of heroes. Drake gets involved in a snowball fight with several of the students. Armed thieves attempt to steal computer components. Drake stops them, as the Ice Man. The students invite the Ice Man to stay, and entertain them with his powers.
Police Lieutenant Jimmy D'Angelo reveals that the computer components where on loan from Doctor Henry Pym. None of the students seem to know the professor who blew the whistle on the robbery. The robbery is revealed to be a ruse, so that a Trojan horse could be installed past security. The mysterious professor, and his armed thugs, make another attempt to steal the components. Once again, they are thwarted by the Ice Man.
"Show Me The Way To Go Home..."
The X-Men watch Zorro. Cerebro informs the X-Men that it has detected half of a mutant signature.Upon investigation, the X-Men discover the Vanisher, caught in a field of dark energy. Against Cyclops' warning, Nightcrawler touches the Vanisher. Nightcrawler, and the Vanisher, are drawn into an alien realm. A band of women approach Nightcrawler and offer to worship him as their God, or King. A band of women also approach the Vanisher, offering to worship him, too, as their God or King.
The high turnover rate of Gods/Kings troubles Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler asks to be brought before the Oracle, Sehv. The Oracle instructs Nightcrawler on how to escape this realm, through the Well At The Center Of Time. Nightcrawler, however, cannot escape, unless the Vanisher goes with him. Nightcrawler tracks down the Vanisher, who has taken full advantage of his God-King status. The Vanisher flees from Nightcrawer. Forced to fight, the Vanisher tries to manipulate the dark energy surrounding him, manifested as his attire.
The Vanisher fails to put up much of a fight. A horrific creature descends upon Nightcrawler, and the Vanisher. Nightcrawler, and the Vanisher, leap into the Well At The Center Of Time, and return whence they came. The Vanisher, however, finds himself completely naked upon his return. The Vanisher teleports away, while the X-Men question Nightcrawler on what just happened.
