Cable #44 (of 107)
Sins Of The Mother
June 1st, 1997
Plot Summary
During an Askani meditative session at the Xavier Institute, Cable's mind is co-opted by his mother, Madelyne Pryor. Her intent is to sway Cable into joining forces with her and destroying all mutants (including Cable's nemesis Apocalypse), leaving the two of them to rule the world.
In the Astral Plane, Madelyne starts off with a recap of how she was created by Mr. Sinister in a lab with the sole purpose of duping Cyclops into marrying her and birthing Cable, of whom Mr. Sinister believed would be the perfect mutant to defeat his former master Apocalypse. But things didn't work out for Madelyne and she admits jealousy and hatred of Jean Grey and the X-Men, which are now her sworn enemies.
Madelyne takes Cable to her former home in Alaska to discuss her life with Cyclops. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey find Cable and become concerned as his body begins to grow cold. Jean decides to try and enter Cable's mind. Madelyne then takes Cable to the New York skyline and the two discuss the events of Inferno where Madelyne tried to sacrifice babies - including baby Cable - to get the power to destroy the X-Men. But Jean's influence on Cable's mind causes Madelyne to lose some of her grip and Cable takes charge by showing her true evil in the form of Apocalypse's old Egyptian lair. He rebuffs her master plan for domination, but suggests that the two keep a meeting place where they can discuss things on neutral ground - the home in Alaska. Madelyne then departs Cable's mind as Jean gets through.
Epilogue: Ch'Vayre decides that his plans for coercing Cable into being the mutant savior is mislead and alters his course. He offers his futuristic knowledge and resources to Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club.
