The book opens with Silvermane and Hammerhead talking about the legal troubles the Kingpin is in, and how vulnerable that makes him to a takeover. Silvermane offers to team up with Hammerhead, but Hammerhead decides to kill Silvermane and try the takeover himself.. At school, Peter and Mary Jane are throwing each other awkward looks as if each wants to say something, while Peter goes through an inner monologue, that eventually leads to him storming out of class. The Kingpin is awakened by his advisor and is told of Silvermanes death. Kingpin figures that Hammerhead and maybe others are making a play for his position, so he orders his advisors to contact Elektra. Hammerhead is at one of the Kingpins warehouses trying to convince some men to switch sides, one guy doesn't like the idea and fires a bullet at close range into the front of Hammerheads skull. This just makes him angry. While swinging around, Spiderman sees the fire and decides to check it out. While he is looking around, Moonknight gets the drop on him and knocks him out.
