X-Force #58 (of 129)
Onslaught Impact 2: ...Before the Dawn
September 30th, 1996
Onslaught plays mind games with X-Force! The team is scattered in telepathic planes, or trapped in the rubble of Xavier’s mansion. What is reality and what is artificial reality becomes confused, as each member re-lives the darkest time of their life, or sees their greatest fear realized.
Notes: Emmanuel DaCosta, Juliana Sandoval, Sabretooth, and Thunderbird only make appearances in dreams.
Synopsis
In an Onslaught-fueled dream, Sunspot is back in Brazil playing soccer. His father and girlfriend watch with delight. After the game, a boy approaches Sunspot and convinces him to gather the other members of X-Force so that all their dreams can come true. Sunspot reluctantly agrees to help the boy.
In Xavier's destroyed mansion, Siryn is the only member of X-Force that is awake after Mr. Sinister's attack. She tries to rouse each member of the team, but they all seem beyond hope. She reaches out to Cable who is fighting Onslaught's forces elsewhere, but the psi-link is disrupted and Cable is too weak to be of much help. She breaks down and begins to pray.
The other X-Force members have dreams similar to Sunspots in that they are shown their ideal lives. Meltdown dreams of being able to defeat Sabretooth as often as she would like. Caliban dreams of a life on a farm very similar to the Superman origin story (with Cable and Domino as his parents, to boot). Warpath dreams of a life where he can be on the reservation with his brother doing superhuman things together. Shatterstar dreams of a life of ease and tranquility. Domino dreams of total nothingness, preferring to keep her past and current wishes unknown. Each member of the team is eventually convinced to join the boy and Sunspot. Once the team is assembled (but not Siryn), the boy urges them to follow him into the light. They nearly do, until the boy reveals too soon that he is Onslaught. X-Force turns from the light regain consciousness.
Now awake, the team reunites with Siryn. Warpath notes that Risque is missing. A boy - one who resembles the one from their dreams, but this time kinder-looking - appears and states that he is a symbol of the remaining innocence of Xavier, the part of Xavier that can't be corrupted by Onslaught. He urges X-Force to continue the fight and then departs.
