General Portrayal

In comics, Afghanistan was originally much like many other countries in its adjacent regions and rarely appeared. But with the hype of the United States' War on Terror in the 00's and specifically their wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Afghanistan became a very popular story setting. Often used to portray characters involved in that war in different capacities, although Iraq was often used in a similar fashion at a similar rate there are also more stories set in historical Iraq as opposed to the modern state while there is less of a distinction for Afghanistan. Indiana Jones comics have featured a more historical Afghanistan multiple times but only as far back as the early 20th century when the character was active.
