Origin

Pre-Flashpoint

Originally created by Ray Palmer's uncle, David Palmer, the Ant Farm was designed to serve as a microscopic panic room for mankind. If something bad were to happen to the world, thanks to its artificial atmosphere, sunlight, fresh water oceans and limitless supply of vegetation, the Ant Farm would be the best gateway for the human race, a microscopic safe house by all means. The only possible access to the Ant Farm was a combination of shrink technology and teleportation.

As an ex-member of The Colony (formerly known as Project Colony), David was being hunted down by The Colony until he sought help from his nephew Ray, who had previously been attacked by the members of The Colony for his shrinking technology and the white dwarf matter, in order to gain full access to the Ant Farm.

Post-Flashpoint

The Ant Farm once again appeared after the events of Flashpoint, qualified with the same capabilities but this time it was created by Ray Palmer, a U.N. Science liaison, responsible for the Ant Farm's whereabouts. This time the Ant Farm serves its part as S.H.A.D.E.'s new base of operations.

Creation

Originally having appeared in the co-feature stories (Nucleus) of Adventure Comics and followed by the relaunch of the DCU, the Ant Farm made its first Post-Flashpoint appearance in Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1.
