Arctic Ocean

Arctic Ocean

A debateably-defined ocean that includes the northernmost point of earth, because the surface of the ocean is mostly ice (especially further north), it is often presented in fiction as if were land where all sorts of imagined bases exist at the North Pole when in fact this has yet to become possible to build in the real world.

Name:
Arctic Ocean
Aliases:
  • North Pole
  • Arctic Circle
  • North Polar Sea
Start year:
1935
First issue:
New Comics (1935) #1
cover

Note: This ocean (and its marginal seas) should only be credited when a story takes place beneath the ocean's surface or outside the (specified) territorial waters of a particular nation. Characters visiting a coastal beach is not a creditable ocean appearance.

Although the vague Arctic will usually refer to the Arctic Ocean and the North Pole absolutely is in the ocean, sometimes the Arctic Circle will describe stories on land within a country's borders, those appearances should not be credited here.

Well known residents of The North Pole include Superman, Doc Savage and Father Christmas.
