According to Greek mythology, Colchis is the kingdom of Etes and Medea and the destination of the Argonauts, or the country of the Amazons. The region currently corresponds to several Georgian provinces, including Svanetia, Ratcha and Abkhazia, Imerethia, Guria, Adjaria plus the northeast of present-day Turkey (provinces of Trabzon and Artvin). The Colches, possibly one of the oldest tribes in Georgia, had been established in the region since the Bronze Age.
