The Czech Republic is a young state located in Europe with a millennium-old history, as the successor to the Kingdom of Bohemia. It was part of the state of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1939 and again from 1945 to 1992. In the interim it was occupied by Nazi Germany. Czechoslovakia was peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Relations remain close and both states have achieved membership in the European Union. The Republic borders Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia.
