Connection to the Occult

In the early years of comics (in the golden age) occult based characters were very popular and ancient Egypt with its mysterious nature was often the basis for superheroes to derive their powers from (examples include Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and the original Blue Beetle.) As well, the setting was a popular one for the adventures of golden and silver age characters, many who got to ancient Egypt by way of time travel.

Arab Spring

In 2010 a wave of revolutionary fervour spread across the Middle East, with Egypt as one of its hot spots. Eventually numerous long serving rulers were deposed across the region. The depiction of these events have occasionally found their way into comics such as in the 2011/2012 Huntress miniseries.
