Haiti is an island nation of the Carribbean Sea. It shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It is the only primarily Francophone independent nation in the Americas. The capital and largest city is Port-au-Prince. Haiti was a French colony until gaining independance in 1804. Its struggle for indeoendance was the culmination of a number of slave revolts. It is the only nation born of a slave revolt.
