Creation

Hyde Street is first seen in a short story by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis in Ghost Machine #1, an anthology preview of Geoff Johns' new imprint.

The Street

Hyde Street is a cosmic street that reveals itself to the right kind of people. It generally has a "Main Street, Anywhere" facade and presumably teleports around the world. The "right kind of people" are usually damned souls passed the point of redemption.

Once a decade, someone is chosen to become a resident. The residents of Hyde Street are given the chance to haunt the souls not chosen to be residents and deliver them to the afterlife by The Scorekeeper. If they deliver 10,000 souls, they may leave Hyde Street if they choose, with their deepest desire made a reality. Although it is not part of the agreement, most of the residents agree that the first to greet a damned soul that wanders onto Hyde Street has first dibs to deliver them. However, if the passerby asks for forgiveness, they are no longer deliverable.

Active Residents

Nanny Nursery

• Recruited: 1866
• Dwelling: Orphanage
• She worked with unhoused children on the American frontier. An exceptionally difficult life led to many deaths which she refused to believe, obsessively caring for dead bodies.

The Colonist

• Recruited: 1871
• The world's first vampire, he technically appeared on Hyde Street for the first time in 1860, but he was not formally recruited until 1871

The Demon Within

• Recruited: 1888
• Swelling: A sizeable estate
• Arthur Whitlock was a decorated general of the British Army who was possessed by an ancient evil when he first arrived on Hyde Street, only to bend that evil to his will.

The Butcher of Hyde Street

• Recruited: 1906
• The subject of one of the largest manhunts in American history, The Butcher doesn't deliver souls. Instead, he attacks residents. At least he did, until he was imprisoned in 1953 thanks to an alliance among a few members

Sister Hood

• Recruited: 1920
• Dwelling: Tarot reading den
• Clarissa Hood was a fortune telling fraud who convinced herself she was helping her marks find closure. Both she and her sister were recruited by the Scorekeeper, but her sister was turned into a bird until she could be collected at the end of Clarissa's 10,000 goal.

The Matinee Monster

• Recruited: 1949
• Dwelling: Castle
• Oscar Oddman dreamt of being a Hollywood star, but his career stalled during the making of a monster movie. He refuses to participate in the Scorekeeper's game and has started actively undermining the other residents, including locking up the Butcher of Hyde Street.

Pranky

• Recruited: 1955
• Dwelling: Treehouse
• Philip "Pip" Peabody was a trickster boy scout turned psychotic by his bitter war veteran father. He enjoys delivering souls and has opted to stay after delivering the 10,000 goal. He also willingly steals deliveries from other residents, especially Mr. X-Ray, extending their stay on Hyde Street.

Mr. X-Ray

• Dwelling: Small sales office
• Francis Xavier Ray was a Madison Avenue ad man, who was forced to go into children's novelty toys when he was caught embezzling. He is desperate to leave Hyde Street.

Raquel Vane

• Recruited 1975
• Dwelling: Hyde Street Hotel penthouse
• Raquel Vane was a pin-up model who didn't even pretend to be humble.

Miss Goodbody

• Recruited: 1983
• Dwelling: Health food store
• Miss Glee Goodbody was a personal trainer turned saleswoman of health and fitness remedies on Hyde Street. She first wandered on to Hyde Street after being sued in the wrongful death of one of her clients.

Doctor Ego

• Recruited: 1997
• Dwelling: Doctor's office
• Doctor Ego was an obsessive plastic surgeon hit with multiple malpractice suits. He continues to hone is skills on Hyde Street, occasionally doing pro bono work and sending patients away with their souls intact.

Green Blood

• Recruited: 2008
• Greenblood was an infamous embezzler during the 2008 financial collapse. Many believe he orchestrated in his own disappearance to avoid justice, but he ended up on Hyde Street instead.

Jen Z

• Recruited: 2019
• A teenager from a politically powerful family who was able to hide her the pedestrian death she caused while driving drunk but could not shield her from Hyde Street finding her.

Retired Residents

The Burning Hag

• Recruited: 1791
• The first successful resident of Hyde Street who is rumored to be connected to the witch trials.

Lost at Sea

• Recruited: 1800
• A sailor of some kind who appeared like a drowning victim.

Little Miss Lamb

• Recruited: 1822
• An innocent looking girl from afar dressed in a lamb costume.

Other Media

• Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story is being developed as a feature film. The script will be written by Maytal Zchut, the writer of the actual comic. Leila Leiz, the artist, will get a "story by" credit.
