Montana is the 41st state of the Union, admitted in 1889. The capital is Helena, the largest city is Billings. Its name is a Spanish term for "mountain". It is the 4th largest state but only the 44th most populous. Only Alaska, Texas and California are larger than it. Due to the wide open plains it is often referred to as "Big Sky Country."  One of the most important historical moments in the Old West occurred here at the Battle of Little Big Horn, and this is occasionally referenced in comics.  

Montana borders the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as the American states of Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota.
