Palestine is a sovereign states with limited recognition (by 136 nations). It has been in constant conflict with Israel over various claims (mostly in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank). Along with Israel, the name was used when the United Kingdom had a League of Nations mandate over the territory (1920-1948).

The name used by Ancient Greek writers for a geographic region in Western Asia between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. It is sometimes considered to include adjoining territories. The region is also known as the Land of Israel, the Holy Land or Promised Land, and historically has been known as the Southern portion of wider regional designations such as Canaan, Syria, as-Sham, and the Levant.
