The Philippine Islands, officially known in its native language as Republika ng Pilipinas, is an archipelago of 7,107 islands and islets off the southern coast of mainland Asia; it is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south, and the South China Sea to the west and north.

The Western world discovered the Philippines in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan landed at its coast. At one time ruled by the Spanish, it was a territory of the United States from 1901 to 1913, eventually gaining its independence. It was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and it played a pivotal role during that conflict.
Also from 1947 until the 1990s, it was home to one of the largest comic book industries in the world.
