The start of the civil war. Stamford CT was a city, which was obliviated by the mutant, Nitro. He was provoked by Namorita, initiating the Super-human Registration Act. This was the devastating reason for the civil war, which caused great aggravation for the planet Earth.

Stamford, a small city in Connecticut, was destroyed by a battle between the New Warriors, and Nitro, Coldheart, Cobalt Man, and Speedfreek. The New Warriors fought this group in hopes of increasing ratings on their TV show. What they didn't expect, though, was a tragedy. Nitro set off an explostion that left the city in rubble. This caused the government to question the values of some superheroes, and in the public's best interest, unveiled the Super-Human Registration Act. Objection to this act was the cause of the Civil War.
Stamford is the home of Camp Hammond, the superhuman training facility and HQ of the Initiative.
