Tiamat was the sister planet to Mars, located in between Mars and Jupiter. 
 
It was once home to an advanced civilization. Intelligent life was brought to Tiamat by the Annunaki, who also brought intelligence to Mars and Earth. For forgotten reasons, Tiamat went to war with Mars. Mars was left a barren wasteland and Tiamat was destroyed, leaving the asteroid belt.
