Tunisia is a North African state, bordering Algeria and Libya. It is also close to the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, both belonging to Italy. Tunisia was the location of the famed city of Carthage and the area played an important role in the histories of the Romans, the Vandals and the Byzantines. It passed in the control various Islamic states since the 7th century. The area was among the major battlegrounds of World War II.
