After his father died in the Vietnam War, Eric Chase's mother sew his service patch into Eric's cape. This patch is probably the cause of its powers, because his father gained the ability to fly from a Vietnam witch.

After Eric's near death experience in his youth, his mother claimed to have thrown the cape away. It was however in her basement, where Eric discovered it when he was an adult. He used the cape to take revenge on his girlfriend, whom he suspected of cheating on him with his brother and on his family for taking the cape away from him.

After Eric's death, his brother Nicky Chase burned the cape.
