The Golden Fleece comes from Greek Mythology story of a golden ram which was gifted to Phrixus by Zeaus the lord of the heavens and King of Gods. It was presented as the fabled task of Jason of the Argonauts as he set sail to a land beyond the known world named Colchis. Jason's very ancestor was Phrixus and as the young Jason demanded that his uncle Peliias renounce his throne as King of IoIcus since he was not the rightful hair. Instead he is sent on the quest for the Golden Fleece by order of King Pelias. With the help of the young sorceress Media Jason was able to acquire the Golden Fleece. With it he returned with Media as he promised her to Iolcus and took his rightful place at the throne of Thessaly.

The Golden Fleece also appeared in popular mainstream over time. In one such version it appeared as the object of power for the hero from Greece named the Olympian. He wore the Golden Fleece and it gave him various magical abilities and attributes. It first appeared in Super Friends #9 in December 1977. Worn by the Olympian in which it was portrayed as a large bulky yellow cape with goat horned cowl as a mask. It than reappeared in DC Comics Presents #46 in June 1982. Since that time it has been worn by the Olympian in every instance.

The Golden Fleece also appears in the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold #7 where the Olympian is shown assisting Batman defeat the evil sorcerous Circe.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Golden Fleece is also represented in both the book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians written by Rick Riordan and published in 2006, and also in the 2013 full length action American fantasy adventure film directed by Thor Freudenthal.

The book is the second instalment novel in the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The book chronicles the journeys of Percy Jackson a 13 year old demigod. Percy and his friends rescue his satyr friend Grover from the Cyclops Polyphemus and save the Camp Half-Breed from a Titan's attack by bringing the Golden Fleece to cure Thalia's poisoned pine tree.

The movie series by the same name Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The hero Jason must find the legendary Golden Fleece to revive the dying tree of Thalia. The fleece which has the power to heal anything, Jason starts a quest and journey's to the location of the fleece which was found to be in the Sea of Monsters which mortals know as the Bermuda Triangle. Jason in the story succeeds and returned it to Camp Half-Blood and gives it a home on Thalia's Tree guarded by the dragon named Peleus. There with its powerful magics it strengthens the magical borders of the Camp after the horrible events during the Sea of Monsters.
