The Black Vault is a portal to the Phantom Zone. Although the purpose of the Black Vault is the same as the Phantom Zone Projector, its physical appearance is vastly different from the Projector.

The Suicide Squad are sent to the Temho-Metya Prison to retrieve the Black Vault from the Russians. They discover that the Black Vault holds General Zod as a prisoner. As soon as they got back to Belle Reve, Amanda Waller gets her team on experimenting with General Zod and analyzing the Black Vault. A scientist suggest that the Black Vault is an offshoot of a cosmic event since it is not entirely compatible with our universe.
