Origin

A physics graduate Ray Palmer discovered a fragment of  White Dwarf Star.  While working on this discovery he devised a way to use the fragment to alter his own size and mass.  He also discovered that it possessed incredible density and miraculous physical properties. He then fashioned a lens from a fragment of the star, and through it focused beams of ultraviolet light.  Ray also incorporated the dwarf star material into a special costume that enabled him to change size at will and he became the Atom.  A piece of this star was later found in the city of Morlaidn in the Amazon Jungle of Brazil.
